Emir Abd al-Qadir al-Jaza’iri (d. 1883) on True Wisdom

“Know [O seekers of truth] that it is necessary to assess the truth of a statement, and not scrutinize the one who utters it. If the statement is true, accept it. This should be the case whether the speaker is generally known for conveying truth or falsehood. For verily, one often finds that gold and jewels are extracted from dirt and the pure rose is often surrounded by thorns. Thus, the truly wise know how to recognize the truthful by those who utter it, rather than identifying the truth based upon [one’s partisanship for] the speaker. The wise know how to gather the truth from all those who convey it, whether the latter be vile and lowly or dignified and honorable .”

Dhikra al-‘Aqil wa Tanbih al-Ghafil (Beirut, 1966), p. 33
