“Al-Andalus” vs. “Andalusia”

Often, these two terms are used interchangeably but they have  completely different connotations. Al-Andalus refers to the Muslim-ruled portions of Iberia (Spain and Portugal) and the tip of North Africa during the Middle Ages. Andalusia, on the other hand, refers to one autonomous community (a set of provinces) in modern-day Spain. To put it in visual terms:
